A computer is made up of several parts that work together to perform different tasks. These parts are known as components of a computer. Each component has a specific function that helps the computer work efficiently.
1. Input Devices
Input devices are used to enter data and instructions into the computer. They allow users to communicate and control the computer.
- Keyboard: Used to type text, numbers, and commands.
- Mouse: Used to point, click, and select items on the screen.
- Scanner: Converts images and text into digital form.
- Microphone: Used to record sound and voice.
- Webcam: Captures live video and pictures.
2. Central Processing Unit (CPU)
The CPU is known as the brain of the computer. It controls all activities and performs calculations and logical operations.
- ALU (Arithmetic and Logic Unit): Performs all mathematical and logical operations.
- CU (Control Unit): Directs all parts of the computer system to perform tasks.
- Memory Unit: Temporarily stores data and instructions during processing.
3. Output Devices
Output devices display or produce the result after processing. They help us see or hear the final output from the computer.
- Monitor: Displays images, videos, and text on the screen.
- Printer: Prints documents and images on paper.
- Speaker: Produces sound output.
- Projector: Displays content on a large screen for presentations.
4. Storage Devices
Storage devices are used to store data, files, and programs. Some storage devices are built into the computer, while others are portable.
- Hard Disk: Main storage device inside the computer.
- Pen Drive: Portable storage device used to transfer files.
- CD/DVD: Optical storage media used for data backup.
- Memory Card: Used in mobile phones and cameras for storage.
5. Input–Process–Output (IPO) Cycle
A computer works in three main steps known as the Input–Process–Output (IPO) Cycle:
- Input: Data is entered into the computer.
- Process: CPU processes the data.
- Output: The result is displayed or printed.
Summary
Computers are made up of different parts that help them work properly. Input devices give data, the CPU processes it, output devices show the result, and storage devices save it for future use.
